Fireworks Safety Tips
Using consumer fireworks on our nation’s birthday is as traditional as cookouts and parades. It can be safe if a few common sense rules are followed, says Ralph Apel, the spokesperson for the National Council on Fireworks Safety. Consumer fireworks go through vigorous third party testing in China before being shipped to the United States.  But he notes, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”), there were an estimated 9,600 fireworks related injuries during the Fourth of July season in 2011. Follow these safety guidelines to ensure that injuries are greatly reduced this season.

Fireworks Are Not For Children
Parents should not allow young children to handle or use fireworks. Children should enjoy the fireworks by only watching them. Fireworks are not intended for use by children.

Alcohol And Fireworks Do Not Mix
Fireworks must be used only by persons who are not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Alcohol and fireworks do not mix.  Save your alcohol for after the show.

Know The Law And Use Your Common Sense
Observe local laws. If fireworks are not legal where you live, do not use them. Be sure to read all the labels and warning before you shoot the product. This will give you a better understanding of the product and never relight a dud.

Shoot On A Solid Surface And In A Clear Area, Open Area
Always light fireworks on a hard, flat surface to insure product stability. It may also be a good idea to brace the product to assure the product will not fall over. Use the fireworks in a clear, open space away from buildings and vehicles, making sure the above area are free from obstacles.

Make Sure All Extremities Are Clear From The Fireworks
Never put your head or any part of your body over the top of any fireworks.  Never look into a tube to check on the firework. Never hold an ignited firework in your hand. It may also be a good idea to wear safety glasses when lighting fireworks.

Be Aware Of Other Fireworks Not Ignited.
It is important to use great care with fireworks not being used that are in the area of your shooting location.  Debris and sparks from ignited fireworks can light others in close proximity. Be sure to cover those products.

Always Have Water Ready
Always have water ready if you are shooting fireworks.

Never light In Windy Conditions
Be cautious of lighting any fireworks during windy conditions.

Fireworks Are Not Toys or Weapons
Never aim or throw fireworks at individuals.

Fireworks Storage
Always store fireworks in a cool, dry place; and dispose of fireworks properly.

Purchase Fireworks From Reliable Sources
Buy fireworks only from reliable, licensed fireworks dealers.  Report  illegal explosives, like M-80s and quarter sticks, to the fire or police department.

Be Aware Of Animal Safety
Be careful using fireworks around animals. Keep animals inside during your use of fireworks, and warn your neighbors that you are about to use fireworks, so they can properly protect their animals.

Fireworks Are Not Allowed On Planes
It is a violation of federal law to transport fireworks on airplanes.  Please do not attempt to do so.
